Painted two years after Bell arrived in St Ives, the abstract composition 'Ropes and Boats' retains something of the vitality of a coastal landscape. Using a subdued palette, Bell motions his brush sparingly across the flat background of the board to great effect, refining his skills in the use of black. The annual Penwith Society exhibition of 1957 featured Trevor Bell alongside W. Barns-Graham, Roger Hilton, Patrick Heron and Ben Nicholson.
