During the early 1970’s Plumb employed vinyl and cloth tape in his paintings. The background was screened in parts with narrow tapes, and the colour applied before they were removed. In these works, the artist was responding to the increasing mechanisation of the modern world. 'Colour Steps No 3' is a relatively small example from a group of works that were usually very large in scale.
