Although primarily a sculptor, Mitchell successfully translated the textured qualities of stone onto a two dimensional surface. Often thought to be studies for sculpture these oils on gesso, or drawings, were usually works in their own right. In the case of Paphos, this delicate and intricate interpretation was produced a year after the bronze.
