Tolgus is one of Mitchell’s most delicate and soaring compositions. A fusion of earlier sculptures featuring linked rising forms - such as Gew, 1960, and Porthcressa, 1961 - this bronze exudes balance and poise. Tolgus was the most significant tin mine in Cornwall, and the title perhaps references Mitchell’s own early experiences carving and hewing rocks as a miner in the 1940s.
