The radical changes that occurred in Gear’s painting in the 1950s clearly illustrate his intention to move towards making sculpture. Though he never realized this ambition, White Unit has such layering that it verges on low relief. Similar paintings of rectilinear form are in the Pier Arts Centre, Orkney, and the Tate Gallery, London.
