Born in Yorkshire, Suddaby was awarded a scholarship to Sheffield School of Art in 1926, moving to London in 1931, with his first exhibition at the Wertheim Gallery during the mid-1930s. Often likened to Christopher Wood, he held a series of successful exhibitions with the Redfern Gallery, which featured stylish landscapes and still-life paintings. Suddaby's works are in numerous public collections, notably the Hepworth Wakefield, Manchester City Art Gallery and Ferens Art Gallery, Hull.
