Delhi Screen was created when Erskine was in India during the late 1980s, working as a designer for the non-aligned Heads of State Convention. He was impressed by workers on the building sites carrying bricks on their heads within a background of bamboo scaffolding, hence the subject matter. This maquette became one of several studies for the life-size sculpture, Passers-By (1986).
