Although not generally known as a St Ives painter, Heath spent a significant amount of time in Cornwall, both before and after the Second World War. He stayed with Terry Frost on numerous occasions and throughout the 1950s and 1960s acted as the main channel of communication between London and St Ives-based artists, including Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, and W. Barns-Graham. As a result of these associations, his work was selected by David Lewis for inclusion in the Tate Gallery exhibition, 'St Ives 1939-1964'. Heath painted 'Study for Melbourne' whilst tutoring at The Bath Academy of Art.
