Barns-Graham's fascination with the ocean can be traced throughout her artistic career. From the early drawings of St Ives through to Atlantic Squall (Kirkcaldy Art Gallery and Museum) and Full Tide (Robert Adams Collection) of the 1970s, she depicted the volatile nature of the sea with increasingly linear simplicity. Eight Lines, Porthmeor (1986) is in the permanent collection of the Tate Gallery.
