Ballard Point is a long headland on the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset. During the 1990s, whilst staying in Paul Nash’s studio on The Parade in Swanage, Gardiner painted a series of reliefs on panel, working both indoors and on the balcony with views out to the bay. This nocturnal example clarifies the distinction between land and sea with classic chiaroscuro.
