The buildings at the summit of St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall, date back to the 12th century. Whilst the Mount is now a tidal island, its Cornish language name—literally, "the grey rock in a wood"—suggests a time before Mount's Bay was flooded. Remains of trees have been seen at low tides following storms on the beach at Perranuthnoe.
