Tintagel, in north Cornwall, has been connected to the legend of King Arthur since the 12th century, when Geoffrey of Monmouth’s chronicle The History of the Kings of Britain cited the settlement as the place of Arthur's conception. The site of Tintagel Castle, a medieval fortification on Tintagel’s rocky peninsula, has been inhabited at least since the late Roman period, with a community also flourishing here in the 5th and 7th centuries. These cliffs are veined with tourmaline, a gemstone which occurs in all colours, here taking on a dark green and milky hue.
