Bell spent the years between 1972 and 1996 teaching and painting in Florida before returning to St Ives. While in the US, he painted some highly vibrant works, which he called his ‘heatscapes’. These works directly reflected the subtropical climate and the profusion of colour in his surroundings. Quiet Florida Image, so-called for its lack of gestural intensity, is a classic example of his work from this period.
