Bernard Cohen b. 1933

Overview

Born in London in 1933 to Orthodox Jewish parents, Cohen spent his early childhood as an evacuee in the countryside of Devon and Somerset. His artistic education started in 1949 at the South-West Essex Technical College and continued at St. Martin’s School of Art (1950-1951) and the Slade School of Fine Art (1951-1954).

The young artist went on to live for nearly two years in Paris, followed by several months in Rome, before returning to London in 1957 to take up a teaching post at Hammersmith School of Art. His first one-man exhibition was held the following year at Gimpel Fils.

He has exhibited regularly in London and abroad. Ten of his works are in the permanent collection of the Tate Gallery.
