Clarke produced a considerable number of sculptures designed to be wall-mounted, from the earliest reliefs of the Fish series in 1951 through to the Cumbrian Project aluminiums on slate of 1981 and the Artists series of 1999. Annunciation take its place in the genre as an amalgamation of designs and inspirations previously seen in the Tankmen and Warriors. The angel Gabriel delivers a proclamation as if viewed through a window, a device for 'looking within' that Clarke often explored.
