The striking Durdle Door, a natural arch on the Dorset coastline, has been cut and sculpted by the waves in vertical Portland Stone. The Door’s poetic name references to this process of coastal erosion, deriving from the Old English word “thirl”, meaning drill or bore. In this painting, Gardiner revisits a subject previously explored in a 2007 work, Durdle Door and Ammonite. Where that work depicted this striking rock formation from above, Cliff Path, Durdle Door achieves a more panoramic view, presenting the arch as a landmark in a dynamic coastal world.
