Biography

John Kingerlee was born in Birmingham in 1936 into a family with County Cork origins. After formal education, he settled in Cornwall, where he lived and worked for over twenty years and developed his enviable skills as an entirely self-taught artist. John exhibited work in London before relocating to the Beara Peninsula in West Cork, Ireland, where he and his wife Mo moved to an isolated farmhouse overlooking Kenmare Bay.

Growing vegetables in their organic garden and surrounding themselves in the wild and beautiful landscape, from which John draws much of his inspiration, their alternative and lonely lifestyle is entirely in tune with the environment. Like many artists experimenting with emotional connections, Kingerlee strives to recreate the experience of being in and moving through the landscape rather than just representing it.

A prolific, even obsessive, painter with a unique style of painting, Kingerlee has held successful exhibitions in the UK, Ireland, and the USA.
