Biography

Underwood was born in London into an intellectual family. A precocious talent he was travelling and sketching by the age of twenty.

War service curtailed his artistic progression but he managed to produce drawings that were published in theIllustrated London News and after being invalided, he submitted studies for camouflage painting to the Imperial War Museum.

Underwood’s first exhibition was at the Chenil Gallery, Chelsea in 1922 and over the next few years he exhibited with many important galleries in London including St Georges, Grafton, Zwemmer, Beaux Arts and Leicester, to name but a few, and internationally in New York.

Always an intrepid traveller he spent time in Iceland, Africa, the USA, Mexico and several locations in Europe. The interaction with primitive cultures did much to inspire his work, particularly sculpture to which he devoted his entire time from 1959.
