At the beginning of his career, in 1953, and again in 1957, he was represented in two of the abstract exhibitions of the Artist International Association. In 1960, he also featured in the groundbreaking 'Situation' exhibition alongside Bridget Riley, Robyn Denny and William Turnbull. Constantly seeking new directions, his work progressed through distinct chronological phases which included the 1960s 'Tape Paintings' and into the 1970s with the 'Chance' and 'Colour Ladder' series. Typically, large-scale and with a randomly selected palette, this painting exemplifies his use of irregular optical devices.
